Thrift Shopping PDF Print E-mail
Also, if you don't have a lot of money, one place to start is the thrift store. Things to look for are:
  • a scarf
  • a shawl
  • plaid trousers for gents
  • doilies to be made into ladies’ head covers
  • white button up blouses for ladies
  • undershirts

Ask a veteran to take you shopping. Their experience can be invaluable in identifying things that will work.
There are also a lot of online resources for buying costumes.

Ladies Thrifting: Shoes, chemise, drawers, corset cover, outerwear, bonnets and petticoats are all easy to obtain second hand and in most cases a carefully selected item will require only small changes in order to pass costume approval.  Nightgowns will benefit from removing the buttons and sewing the front part of all of the way so that the buttons aren't digging in under your corset.  Pajama pants can be shortened and have a little lace added to the bottom to make drawers.  Wool hats can be cut and steamed into acceptable bonnets.  The only parts of your costume you should expect to have to purchase new are your corset, dress and hoop skirt/crinoline if you are middle class.

Ladies Overview PDF Print E-mail

Back in the day, people wore a lot more clothing than we wear now. Remember, England is exceptionally cold in the winter and there was no such thing as central heating. Typically there were 7 or 8 layers of clothing.  You can eliminate some layers but others remain essential.

A very important note:
Please wear your costume shoes and corset before opening day. Wear them to workshops and rehearsals as soon as possible. Do not try to break them in opening weekend. You will regret it.

Should Belle Leave Scrooge?

After Fair
If your feet are killing you, draw a washtub ankle deep of hot water. Pour in one packet of Johnson's Foot Soap. Why does it work? I don't know. But it does. It takes the ache right out of your feet.
